"its chain of transmission is authentic!" I said: ʿAṭāʾ had become confused, and Jarīr heard from him during his confusion, but it is strengthened by what precedes it, and Allāh knows best.

"If any of your rulers command you to commit a sin, do not obey them." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2/201-202), Ibn Ḥibbān (1552), and Aḥmad (3/67) from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from ʿUmar ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Thawbān from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent ʿAlqamah ibn Mujazziz on an expedition and I was among them. When he reached the head of his detachment, or was on part of the road, a group from the army sought his permission, and he granted it to them, and he appointed ʿAbdullāh ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Qays al-Sahmī over them. I was among those who went on the expedition with him. When they were on part of the road, the people lit a fire to warm themselves or to cook something on it. ʿAbdullāh said—he was known for his humor—'Do you not owe me hearing and obedience?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then I am not commanding you to do anything except that you do it?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then I insist that you leap into this fire.' Some people got up and prepared themselves, and when he thought they were about to leap, he said, 'Hold yourselves back, for I was only joking with you.' When we returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ..." and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim narrated a portion from the beginning of it (3/630). I said: Its chain of transmission is good.

"Whoever leads a people in prayer while they dislike him, his prayer will not rise above his collarbone." It was narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir (4/15/2) from Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab from Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ṣanābīḥī:
