"This Ismāʿīl, I think, is Ibn ʿAyyāsh, and he was not relied upon." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and he even asserted this, for when he presented the isnād of the ḥadīth from Ismāʿīl, he said: "Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Ayyūb...". He added "Ibn ʿAyyāsh" himself in the core of the isnād. This is a mistake from him and from al-Ḥākim as well, for he is not Ibn ʿAyyāsh, but rather Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah, who is trustworthy and from the men of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], and they mentioned among his teachers this Ayyūb, who is al-Sakhtiyānī. And Muḥammad ibn Muṣṭafá al-Ḥimṣī, al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful, but he has errors, and he used to practice tadlīs." I say: He explicitly stated here that he narrated, so we are safe from the suspicion of his tadlīs. And ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān is al-Ḥāfiẓ, the son of al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī, the author of "al-Sunan," and he is trustworthy, though his father spoke of him in a way that was not accepted by others. And the one protected is the one whom Allāh protects, so the isnād is good. Al-Ḥākim also narrated (2/595) through the path of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī from ʿAṭāʾ, the freed slave of Umm Ḥabībah, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "ʿĪsá ibn Maryam will indeed descend as a just judge..." the ḥadīth. Abū Hurayrah says: "O my nephew! If you see him, say: Abū Hurayrah sends you greetings." Al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. And I say: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq is a mudallis, and he narrated it with ʿanʿanah. And ʿAṭāʾ, the freed slave of Umm Ḥabībah, I did not know him, and perhaps Umm Ḥabībah is a distortion of Umm Ṣubayyah, for ʿAṭāʾ, the freed slave of Umm Ṣubayyah, is from the men of al-Nasāʾī. He narrated from Abū Hurayrah. And from him, Saʿīd al-Maqburī, who is unknown.
