however, ʿAbd al-Karīm differed in its text from Mujāhid with it, except that he said: "five hundred years." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2611): Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us, Sufyān informed us from ʿAbd al-Karīm with it. Al-Būṣīrī said in "Zawāʾid" (161/2): "Its isnād is authentic." Al-Sindī mentioned in his "Ḥāshiyah" on Ibn Mājah that he justified this by saying: "because Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ is Abū Jaʿfar al-Jurjānī (1) the merchant, about whom Ibn Maʿīn said: there is no harm in him. Abū Ḥātim said: sound in ḥadīth. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt," and the rest of the men of the isnād are not questioned about their status due to their fame." And I say: this is acceptable on the consideration that this ʿAbd al-Karīm is al-Jazarī, and with this, al-Mundhirī was decisive in "al-Targhīb" (3/88), and I did not find anything to support this decisiveness. Rather, the possibility that he is ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq, the weak one, is present, because both of them were mentioned among the teachers of Sufyān, who is Ibn ʿUyaynah, as they mentioned Mujāhid among their teachers together. However, this possibility is favored by the mentioned difference, for it is more appropriate for the weakened ʿAbd al-Karīm than for the trustworthy ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī. And Allāh knows best. The ḥadīth is in "al-Ṣaḥīḥayn" and others from Saʿd and Abū Bakrah as marfūʿ without the phrase: "and its scent is found." It is recorded in "Ghāyat al-Marām" (267).
