It was recorded by al-Jundī in "Faḍāʾil al-Madīnah" (no. 31 - my manuscript). I said: Its narrators are trustworthy except for Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh - who is Ibn Abī Sabrah - and he is accused of fabricating, so he is not suitable for testimony. The ḥadīth has been authentically reported from Jābir with the wording: "Whoever frightens the people of Madīnah, has frightened what is between my sides." It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/354 and 393) from Zayd ibn Aslam from him. Its narrators are those of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], except that Zayd did not hear from Jābir as Ibn Maʿīn said. It was also recorded by Aḥmad ibn al-Muhandis in "Ḥadīth ʿĀfiyah and Others" (2132/1) and Ibn ʿAsākir (16/240/2) through two chains from the nephew of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Jābir with it. I did not know the nephew of Jābir. He was followed by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nustās from Jābir. It was also recorded by Ibn ʿAsākir from Hāshim ibn Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ from him. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nustās was deemed trustworthy by al-Nasāʾī, and no one narrated from him except this Hāshim. It was narrated by Muḥammad ibn Kulayb from Maḥmūd and Muḥammad, the sons of Jābir, who heard Jābir say: and he mentioned it as a marfūʿ ḥadīth except that they said: "the Anṣār" instead of "the people of Madīnah." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/1/53 and 4/1/404). I said: Its narrators are trustworthy, with weakness in Muḥammad ibn Jābir as mentioned earlier, and as for his brother Maḥmūd, al-Bukhārī mentioned this ḥadīth in his biography without any criticism or commendation.
