"If forty believers intercede for a believer, Allāh will accept their intercession for him." Narrated by Ibn Mājah (1/453) from Bakr ibn Sulaym who said: Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād al-Kharrāṭ narrated to me from Kurayb, the freed slave of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, who said: "A son of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās passed away, and he said to me: O Kurayb! Go and see if anyone has gathered for my son. I said: Yes. He said: Woe to you, how many do you see... forty? I said: No, rather more. He said: Then take my son out, for I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: [and he mentioned it]." I said: This isnād is weak, its flaw is Bakr, who was mentioned by al-Dhahabī in "al-Mughnī", and he said: "Ibn ʿAdī said: He narrates what no one else follows him in, and he is weak." I said: And he was contradicted in his isnād by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb who said: Abū Ṣakhr (who is Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād al-Kharrāṭ) narrated to me from Sharīk ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Namr from Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbās, with a similar narration, and the wording of the elevated part is: "If a Muslim man dies, and forty men who do not associate anything with Allāh stand over his funeral, Allāh will accept their intercession for him." "There is no heart among the hearts except that it has a cloud like the cloud of the moon; while the moon is shining, a cloud covers it and it darkens, then it clears away and it shines again."
