(Note): Our colleague Ḥamdī al-Salafī criticized the ḥadīth in his commentary on "al-Ṭabarānī" due to the use of ʿanʿanah by al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, but he missed that it was explicitly stated as a narration by Ibn Ḥibbān, Abū ʿAwānah, and Aḥmad through various chains from al-Ḥasan: "Ṣaʿṣaʿah narrated to me." Hence, the note was necessary.
- "If you made a vow, then strike, otherwise do not." It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3691), Ibn Ḥibbān (4371 - al-Iḥsān), al-Bayhaqī (10/77), and Aḥmad (5/353) through the route of al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah narrated to me, saying: I heard Buraydah say: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out on one of his expeditions, and when he returned, a black slave girl came and said: O Messenger of Allāh! I vowed that if Allāh returned you safely, I would strike the tambourine before you and sing. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... (he mentioned it), so she began to strike. Abū Bakr entered while she was striking, then ʿAlī entered while she was striking, then ʿUthmān entered while she was striking, and then ʿUmar entered, whereupon she threw the tambourine under her and sat on it. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Indeed, Satan is afraid of you, O ʿUmar! I was sitting while she was striking, then Abū Bakr entered while she was striking, then ʿAlī entered while she was striking, then ʿUthmān entered while she was striking, but when you entered, O ʿUmar, she threw the tambourine." Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." I say: Its isnād is good, its narrators are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, and there is some criticism of al-Ḥusayn which does not harm. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful, but with errors."
