al-Ghifārī said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, and he mentioned it with the addition of "and the Christians." I said: This isnād is authentic; its men are trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs, except that al-Bukhārī narrated from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar in a suspended manner. However, I see that the mention of "the Christians" in this ḥadīth is an error, likely from some copyists, for Imām Aḥmad narrated it in "al-Musnad" (6/398) with al-Fasawī's isnād without this phrase, and its context is as follows: He said to them one day: "I am going to the Jews, so whoever goes with me, if they greet you, then say: 'And upon you.'" And he added: "So we went, and when we reached them, they greeted us, so we said: 'And upon you.'" Similarly, al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in "al-Kabīr" (2/311/2162): Abū Muslim al-Kushī narrated to us, Abū ʿĀṣim narrated it. Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq followed him from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb with it. It was produced by Aḥmad, al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1102) and Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (8/630) as well as Ibn Mājah (3743 - edited by al-Aʿẓamī), but they made it from the Musnad of Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Juhanī! It is anomalous from the errors of Ibn Isḥāq in my opinion, and al-Būṣīrī criticized it in "al-Zawāʾid" (223/1) due to the tadlīs of Ibn Isḥāq, and it was hidden from him that he had explicitly stated transmission with Aḥmad (4/233) in one of his narrations, even though he attributed it to him! So the defect is what I mentioned of anomaly due to its contradiction with the narration of Abū ʿĀṣim - who is al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Makhlad al-Nabīl - from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar. And Wakīʿ followed him from him. It was narrated by Aḥmad and Ibn Abī Shaybah
