"If you were to remain in the same state after leaving my presence as you are when with me, the angels would shake hands with you in the streets of Medina." It was recorded by al-Ismāʿīlī in "al-Muʿjam" (29/1-2): Muḥammad ibn Hārūn ibn Dāhir narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghayāth narrated to us, Ghasān ibn Barzīn al-Ṭahawī narrated from Thābit al-Bunānī from Anas ibn Mālik who said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went in the morning and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We have perished, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah. He said: What is that? They said: Hypocrisy, hypocrisy!! He said: Do you not testify that there is no deity but Allāh and that I am the Messenger of Allāh? They said: Yes. He said: That is not hypocrisy. Then they returned to him a second time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We have perished, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah. He said: What is that? They said: Hypocrisy, hypocrisy. He said: Do you not testify that there is no deity but Allāh and that I am the Messenger of Allāh? They said: Yes. He said: That is not hypocrisy. Then they returned to him a third time and said the same thing, and he said to them: That is not hypocrisy. They said: O Messenger of Allāh! When we are with you, we are in one state, but when we leave, the world and our families occupy us. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) then mentioned it. I say: This isnād is good, its narrators are trustworthy and mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" except for al-Ismāʿīlī's shaykh, Ibn Dāhir, who was mentioned by al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (3/355) only through al-Ismāʿīlī's narration from him, and he provided another ḥadīth from him without mentioning any criticism or praise. But it appears that he is among those accepted by al-Ismāʿīlī, as he mentioned in the introduction to his book "al-Muʿjam" that he clarifies the status of those whose path in ḥadīth is condemned due to apparent falsehood, accusation, or deviation from the community of ḥadīth scholars due to ignorance or neglect. And Allāh knows best. The ḥadīth is authentic—I mean the ḥadīth of the translation—as it has many supporting narrations and chains from Anas and others, and some have been previously mentioned under numbers (1948, 1963, 1965, and 1976).
