"What you taught him when he was ignorant, and fed him when he was hungry or starving." It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (1/408-409), Ibn Mājah (2/44), al-Ḥākim (4/133), al-Bayhaqī (10/2), Aḥmad (4/166-167), and Ibn Saʿd (7/55) from Abū Bishr from ʿUbādah ibn Sharḥabīl who said: "A drought struck me, so I entered an orchard from the orchards of the city, and I rubbed some ears of grain and ate, and carried some in my garment. Its owner came, struck me, and took my garment. I went to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said to him: (he mentioned it) and ordered him, so he returned my garment and gave me a measure or half a measure of food." Al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said.
"What your heart rejects, leave it." It was narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak in "al-Zuhd" (824 and 1162): Ibn Lahīʿah informed us, he said: Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb narrated to us that Suwayd ibn Qays informed him that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥudayj informed him: "A man asked the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh! What is permissible for me from what is forbidden to me? The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) remained silent. He repeated it three times, and each time the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) remained silent. He said: Who is the questioner? The man said: It is I, O Messenger of Allāh! He then tapped with his fingers: "he mentioned it." I said: And this isnād is mursal and authentic, its men are trustworthy, for Ibn Lahīʿah is reliable in ḥadīth when narrated from by the ʿAbādilah, and Ibn al-Mubārak is one of them. And it has a corroborating narration from the ḥadīth of Abū Umāmah who said:
