Hishām from Muḥammad from Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. And he said: "We do not know anyone who narrated from Hishām except Muḥammad and ʿAwn ibn ʿUmārah, and ʿAwn is weak in ḥadīth." I said: This isnād is weak. Jamīl ibn al-Ḥasan, the ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful but makes mistakes, ʿAbdān exaggerated in his praise of him." And his teacher Muḥammad ibn Marwān—who is al-ʿUqaylī—is similar to him. The ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful but has errors." And his follower ʿAwn ibn ʿUmārah is weak. Abū Usāmah contradicted them and said: from Hishām with it being mawqūf on Abū Hurayrah. Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded it in "al-Muṣannaf" (11/77/10561). And Abū Usāmah is Ḥammād ibn Usāmah, and he is trustworthy but a mudallis. I said: And I have found a supporting mawqūf narration as well. Al-Dārimī said in "Sunan" (2/128): al-Ḥakam ibn al-Mubārak informed us, al-Walīd informed us, Jābir narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Qays narrated to me, one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated to me and he mentioned it. Thus it appeared in the Shāmī manuscript as mawqūf, and likewise in its Indian original (p. 275). But in its margin: "Copy: from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said." Then the isnād is problematic, for I do not know this Jābir nor his teacher Muḥammad ibn Qays. It is possible that the scribe omitted the word: (ibn), and the correct version is: (narrated to us by Ibn Jābir), who is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir al-Shāmī al-Dārānī, as he is among the teachers of al-Walīd, who is Ibn Muslim al-Dimashqī, and this is among the teachers of al-Ḥakam ibn al-Mubārak. As for Muḥammad ibn Qays, nothing is clear to me now, except that it occurs to the mind that he might be Muḥammad ibn Qays al-Madanī, the storyteller of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū Ibrāhīm.
