they said: We have sworn to them, so if you wish, we will fight with you. He said: "We will fulfill their covenant and seek Allāh's help against them." This was also narrated by al-Walīd ibn Jamīʿ, who reported from Abū al-Ṭufayl, who reported from Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, who said: "Nothing prevented me from witnessing Badr except that I went out with my father Ḥusayn. He said: The disbelievers of Quraysh captured us and said: You intend to join Muḥammad. We said: We do not intend to join him, we only want to go to Madīnah. They took from us the covenant and pledge of Allāh that we would return from Madīnah and not fight with him. We came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and informed him of the matter. He said: Return, we will fulfill their covenant..." It was recorded by Muslim (5/177) and also by al-Ḥākim (3/201-202) as well as Aḥmad (5/395). Al-Ḥākim said: "Its isnād is authentic, and they did not record it!" Al-Dhahabī agreed with him! They erred twice: the first was his correction of it over Muslim, although he recorded it. The other was limiting his authentication without qualification, while it is according to Muslim's conditions!
