that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to stand on Fridays and lean his back against a trunk set up in the mosque to deliver the sermon to the people. A Roman came to him and said, "Shall I not make something for you to sit on as if you are standing?" So he made for him a pulpit with two steps, and he would sit on the third. When the Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sat on that pulpit, the trunk moaned like the bellowing of a bull until the mosque trembled out of sorrow for the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) descended from the pulpit and embraced it while it was moaning. When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) embraced it, it calmed down. Then he said, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, if I had not embraced it, it would have continued like this until the Day of Resurrection out of sorrow for the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ordered that it be buried. I said: Its isnād is good, and it is according to the conditions of Muslim. It has a witness from the ḥadīth of Jābir in a shortened form from three authentic routes from him. It was narrated by al-Bukhārī (3584 and 3585), al-Dārimī (2/366-367), al-Nasāʾī (1/207), Ibn Mājah (1417), and Aḥmad (3/306, 324). And another from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar narrated by al-Bukhārī (3583) and Aḥmad (2/23 and 109) and authenticated by al-Tirmidhī (no. 506).

"If the one who drinks while standing knew what is in his stomach, he would vomit." It was recorded by ʿAbd al-Razzāq (19588) and from him by al-Bayhaqī (7/282): Maʿmar reported from al-Zuhrī from Abū Hurayrah in a marfūʿ form.
