"If I had not embraced it, it would have lamented until the Day of Resurrection. He means the palm trunk to which he used to deliver sermons." This was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (4/1/26), al-Dārimī (1/18-19 and 367), Ibn Mājah (1/433), Aḥmad (1/249 and 266-267 and 363), al-Baghawī in "Ḥadīth Hudbah ibn ʿAmmār" (1/257-258), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (1/508) through various chains from Ḥammād ibn Salamah from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār from Ibn ʿAbbās and from Thābit from Anas: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to deliver sermons to a palm trunk. When he made the pulpit, he went to the pulpit, and the trunk lamented. He came to it and embraced it, and it calmed down, and he said: ..." and he mentioned it. I say: This chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim from both perspectives, and it was also recorded from the first perspective by Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (1/252) as well as al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (3/179/1) and Abū Mūsá al-Madīnī in "al-Laṭāʾif" (folio 78/2). Ḥammād also narrated it from Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd from al-Ḥasan from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in a mursal form. It was also recorded by al-Baghawī. Al-Ṣaʿq followed him, saying: I heard al-Ḥasan say, and he mentioned it more completely. It was recorded by al-Dārimī, and al-Mubārak ibn Faḍālah opposed him by narrating it from al-Ḥasan from Anas ibn Mālik in a summarized form.
