"the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took the hand of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf and went with him to his son Ibrāhīm, whom he found in the throes of death. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took him and placed him in his lap, and he wept. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to him, 'Do you weep? Did you not forbid weeping?' He said..." and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said, "A good ḥadīth." I said: Ibn Abī Laylā—whose name is Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—had poor memory, so it appears that it is considered good due to other supporting narrations. I have come across the ḥadīth of Anas with a good isnād, previously cited as number (427). I found another chain for it, as Ibn al-Sammāk mentioned in "The First of His Ḥadīth" (p. 87/2): al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, ʿUbayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Tamīmī narrated to us, he said: ʿĪsá ibn Ṭahmān narrated to me from Anas, similar to the ḥadīth of Ibn Abī Laylā. However, this ʿUbayd was mentioned by Ibn Abī Ḥātim (2/2/410) and he was given the kunyah Abū Muḥammad al-Bazzār. Abū Usāmah al-Kalbī narrated from him, and he said about his father: "I do not know him, and the ḥadīth he narrated is a lie." The ḥadīth he referred to is unknown to me, and it is certainly not this one. And Allāh knows best.

"When Allāh created Adam, He left him, and Iblīs began to circle around him, observing him. When he saw him hollow, he said, 'I have triumphed over him, a creation that cannot control itself.'" Narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad in "al-Zuhd" (p. 48) and Ibn ʿAsākir (2/310/1) from Hudbah ibn Khālid, who narrated from Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Thābit from Anas in a marfūʿ form. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim, and he included it in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (8/31) through two other chains from Ḥammād, without the phrase "I have triumphed over him," which is why al-Ḥākim critiqued it
