I said: This chain of narration is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It has a corroborating narration reported by ʿAlī ibn Zayd from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah from his father as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/44 and 50) and al-Ṭaḥāwī in "al-Mushkil" (4/312). I said: Its chain is acceptable for corroborations; its narrators are trustworthy according to the criteria of Muslim, except for ʿAlī ibn Zayd—who is Ibn Judʿān—he is weak due to poor memory.
"he liked pleasant scents." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/178), al-Ḥākim (4/188-189), Aḥmad (6/144, 219, and 249), and Ibn Saʿd (1/453) through various chains from Hammām ibn Yaḥyá from Qatādah from Muṭarrif from ʿĀʾishah: "She made a black woolen cloak for the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he wore it. When he perspired, he noticed the smell of the wool, so he removed it, and he..." and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. It was also recorded by Abū al-Shaykh (p. 129) in a similar manner.
"The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was recognized by the scent of perfume when he approached." It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd (1/399) and al-Dārimī (1/32) from al-Aʿmash from Ibrāhīm, who said: and he mentioned it. I said: Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is mursal or muʿḍal, as Ibrāhīm—who is Ibn Yazīd al-Nakhaʿī—is a minor Successor, and most of his narrations are from the Successors. Then Ibn Saʿd narrated from the route of Abū Bishr, the Basran: Yazīd al-Raqāshī informed us that
