- "No, but shake hands. Meaning, do not bow to your friend, embrace him, or kiss him when you meet him." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2/121), Ibn Mājah (3702), al-Bayhaqī (7/100), and Aḥmad (3/198) through various chains from Ḥanẓalah ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Sadūsī who said: Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us that a man said: "O Messenger of Allāh, when one of us meets his friend, should he bow to him?" The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) replied: "No." He said: "Should he embrace and kiss him?" He said: "No." He said: "Should he shake hands with him?" He said: "Yes, if he wishes." The context is from Aḥmad and likewise al-Tirmidhī, but he does not include: "if he wishes," and the wording of Ibn Mājah is similar, and it includes: "No, but shake hands." The ḥadīth is also narrated by Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī in "Mā Asnad al-Thawrī" (1/46/2), Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī in "al-Fawāʾid" (97/1) and in "al-Rubāʿiyyāt" (1/93/2), al-Bāghandī in "Ḥadīth Shaybān wa Ghayrih" (191/1), Abū Muḥammad al-Mukhalladī in "al-Fawāʾid" (236/2), and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in "al-Muṣāfaḥah" (32/2) and in "al-Muntaqá min Masmūʿātihi bi-Marw" (28/2), all from Ḥanẓalah with it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good ḥadīth." I say: It is as he said, or even higher, for all its narrators are trustworthy except for this Ḥanẓalah, as they considered him weak, but they did not accuse him. Rather, Yaḥyá al-Qaṭṭān and others mentioned that he became confused, so someone like him is used as supporting evidence, and his ḥadīth is strengthened when corroborated.
