to him of pain in his legs except that he said: Dye your legs." I said: This isnād has trustworthy men, but there is a disagreement in its isnād regarding Fāʾid. Abū Saʿīd narrated it in this way, and Abū ʿĀmir narrated: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Mawālī narrated to us from Ayyūb ibn Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Rāfiʿ from his grandmother Salmā, the servant of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: and he mentioned it. And he omitted Fāʾid from it. It was recorded by Aḥmad and al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/1/411) and al-Ḥākim (4/206), who said: "The isnād is authentic, and al-Bukhārī (may Allāh have mercy on him) used ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Mawālī as evidence." I said: and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and Ayyūb was described by al-Azdī as: "a denier of ḥadīth." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt." As for Fāʾid in the first aspect, he is trustworthy, except for the inconsistency attributed to him, and al-Bukhārī pointed to this in "al-Tārīkh." Among that is what was narrated by Ḥammād ibn Khālid al-Khayyāṭ: Fāʾid, a client of the family of Abū Rāfiʿ, narrated to us from ʿAlī ibn ʿUbayd Allāh from his grandmother Salmā—who served the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)—who said: "Whenever the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) had a sore or a wound, he would order me to apply henna to it." It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/5), who said: "A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth; we only know it from the narration of Fāʾid." Some narrated this ḥadīth from Fāʾid and said: from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAlī from his grandmother Salmā, and ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAlī is more accurate."
