however, al-Dāraqutnī distinguished between them, saying about the first: "fabricates ḥadīth," and about the other: "weak." Al-Dhahabī and al-ʿAsqalānī followed this distinction, thus differentiating between them. And Allāh knows best. Fifth: Al-Ṭabarānī also said, and from him Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (2/34): "Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-Nawfalī al-Madīnī narrated to us, Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah al-Zubayrī informed us, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad al-Darāwardī from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father said: 'ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) called ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and spoke to him privately, then ʿAlī stood in the portico and found al-ʿAbbās, ʿAqīl, and al-Ḥusayn. He consulted them about marrying Umm Kulthūm to ʿUmar. ʿAqīl became angry and said: "O ʿAlī! The days, months, and years only increase your blindness in your affairs. By Allāh, if you do it, such and such will happen"—mentioning several things—and he left dragging his garment. ʿAlī said to al-ʿAbbās: "By Allāh, that was not advice from him, but ʿUmar's authority drove him to what you see. By Allāh, it is not out of desire for you, O ʿAqīl, but ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) informed me that he heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: ..." and he mentioned the ḥadīth. This isnād [chain of transmission] consists of trustworthy men, all of whom are narrators of "al-Ṣaḥīḥ" except for al-Nawfalī, the shaykh of al-Ṭabarānī, for whom I found no biography. Ibn Shāhīn extracted the marfūʿ [elevated] part of it in "al-Afrād" (2/1) from Salamah ibn Shabīb, who informed us, al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Aʿyan, who informed us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd ibn Aslam from his father with it. And he said: "Salamah ibn Shabīb is unique in narrating this ḥadīth; I know of no one else who narrated it."
