that Allāh's Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (he mentioned it): "I wished to have a connection and kinship with you, O family of the house." Then ʿAlī stood up and instructed his daughter from Fāṭimah to be adorned, and then he sent her to the Commander of the Faithful, ʿUmar. When he saw her, he stood up, took hold of her leg, and said: "Tell your father: I am pleased, I am pleased, I am pleased." When the girl returned to her father, he asked her: "What did the Commander of the Faithful say to you?" She replied: "He called me and kissed me, and when I stood up, he took hold of my leg and said: 'Tell your father I am pleased.'" So he married her to him, and she bore him Zayd ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, who lived until he became a man, and then he died." It was recorded by Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī in "al-Fawāʾid" (73/257/1), Ibn ʿAdī (6/2), and al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (6/182) in the biography of Ibn Rustam, and he did not mention any criticism or praise about him. As for Ibn ʿAdī, he said about him: "He is not well-known, his ḥadīth is rejected from the trustworthy." I said: The most objectionable part is the mention of the kissing, and as for the uncovering of the leg, it has been reported through other chains, which are: the second: from the chains from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad from his father (some added: from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn): "ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb proposed to ʿAlī for Umm Kulthūm, and he said: 'Marry her to me.' ʿAlī replied: 'I have reserved her for the son of my brother, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar.' ʿUmar said: 'Marry her to me, for by Allāh, there is no one among the people who has more concern for her matter than I do.' So ʿAlī married her to him, and ʿUmar went to the Emigrants and said: 'Will you not congratulate me?' They asked: 'With whom, O Commander of the Faithful?' He replied: 'Umm Kulthūm, daughter of ʿAlī and daughter of Fāṭimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), for I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam):' and he mentioned it." It was recorded by Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr in "Sunan" (520-521), Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (8/463), al-Thaqafī in "al-Fawāʾid" (number 40 of my copy), al-Ḥākim (3/142) with the addition, and likewise al-Bayhaqī (7/63-64), and al-Ḥākim said:
