he mentioned it, and al-Ḥākim said: "Its isnād is authentic, and ʿAlī ibn Ḥafṣ — in the original: Jaʿfar, which is an error — al-Madāʾinī is trustworthy." al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. Muslim also reported it through two other chains from Shuʿbah with it, except that he said: "a lie" instead of: "a sin." From this, you learn that Abū Dāwūd's statement following it: "and no one else narrated it except this shaykh, meaning ʿAlī ibn Ḥafṣ al-Madāʾinī." This pertains to what he had access to from the chains, otherwise, the two other chains refute him. The possibility that he intended the specific wording: "a sin" is very unlikely because the difference between the two words is merely verbal, as is evident. The second wording has a corroborating report that will be mentioned shortly. There is another chain for the ḥadīth with Ibn al-Mubārak in "al-Zuhd" (735): Yaḥyá ibn ʿUbayd Allāh informed us, saying: I heard my father say: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: and he mentioned it. I said: And this isnād is weak. The corroborating report was produced by al-Qaḍāʿī in "Musnad al-Shihāb" (1415) through the chain of Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ who said: My father al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Hilāl informed us, saying: Hilāl ibn ʿUmar informed me, who informed me from ʿUmar ibn Hilāl from Abū Ghālib from Abū Umāmah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "It is enough of a lie for a person to narrate everything he hears." I said: And this isnād is weak, Hilāl ibn ʿUmar — who is al-Raqī, the grandfather of Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ who is below him in the chain — Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/2/78) from his father: "weak in ḥadīth."
