- "Upon them is what they have borne, and upon you is what you have borne." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/1/42) from Muḥammad ibn Abī Isrāʾīl, who heard from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Bashīr from ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil from his father that he said to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): "What if we have leaders who act contrary to the obedience of Allāh?" He said: "Then he mentioned it," and then narrated it through the route of Shuʿbah from Simāk from ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil from his father, and Salamah ibn Yazīd al-Juʿfī said to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) something similar. And through the route of Isrāʾīl, he said: Simāk narrated to us from ʿAlqamah who said to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). I say: The first narration is defective due to Muḥammad ibn Abī Isrāʾīl, and in his biography, al-Bukhārī mentioned the ḥadīth without any criticism or endorsement, and likewise did Ibn Abī Ḥātim in his book (3/2/209) without mentioning that, so he is among the unknowns. The second narration has a sound isnād, all its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, and it is more authentic than the third narration because Shuʿbah is more reliable than Isrāʾīl, especially in narrating from Simāk. The ḥadīth was attributed by al-Suyūṭī to al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" from Yazīd ibn Salamah al-Juʿfī, and al-Munāwī said: "al-Haythamī said: In it is ʿUbayd ibn ʿUbaydah whom I do not know, and the rest of its men are trustworthy." And al-Munāwī agreed with him. And I say: Its isnād with al-Bukhārī is not from his routes, and this is among the virtues of tracing the routes and isnāds, so all praise is due to Allāh for His guidance. Then I came across its isnād in "al-Kabīr," and I saw that he recorded it (6322) through the route of ʿUbayd ibn ʿUbaydah who narrated to us from al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān from his father from Zāʾidah from Simāk with it similar to the narration of Shuʿbah. So his narration gained strength upon strength with this corroboration.
