and this is a sound chain of transmission according to the criteria of Muslim, and he has included with it in his Ṣaḥīḥ the two ḥadīths referred to. The ḥadīth has been reported with different wording through many chains from Muʿāwiyah and others, so refer to "There will always remain a group..." number (1958).

- "Indeed, this tuft is from your spoils, and I have no share in it except my portion with you, except for the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So return the thread and the needle and anything larger or smaller, and do not commit treachery, for treachery is fire and disgrace for its owners in this world and the Hereafter. Strive against people for the sake of Allāh, whether they are near or far, and do not fear the blame of any critic in the cause of Allāh. Establish the limits of Allāh in both residence and travel, and strive in the path of Allāh, for jihād is a great gate among the gates of Paradise, through which Allāh saves from distress and anxiety." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/314, 316, 326) through various chains from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Maryam, from Abū Salām al-Aʿraj, from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib al-Kindī. He sat with ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, Abū al-Dardāʾ, and al-Ḥārith ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Kindī, and they discussed the ḥadīth of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). Abū al-Dardāʾ said to ʿUbādah: O ʿUbādah! The words of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in such and such expedition regarding the fifths. ʿUbādah said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prayed with them in an expedition to a camel from the distribution, and when he finished, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stood up and took a tuft between his fingers and said: "Indeed, this is from your spoils..." the ḥadīth. This chain of transmission is weak. Al-Haythamī said (5/338): "Aḥmad narrated it, and in it is Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, who is weak."
