It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (1/614) and al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (1/341): Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, Sulaymān ibn Sulaym al-Katānī narrated to me from Yaḥyá ibn Jābir from Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah from his uncle Mukhmir ibn Muʿāwiyah who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: and he mentioned it. And it was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/135): ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr narrated to us, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us with it, except that he said: from his uncle Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah. They differed regarding the name of his companions. This is not harmful, if Allāh wills. This is a sound isnād, and its men are trustworthy as mentioned in "al-Zawāʾid." I say: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh is reliable in his narrations from the people of Shām, and this is among them. As for the statement of al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Fatḥ" (6/46) after attributing it to al-Tirmidhī: "There is weakness in its isnād," it is baseless after we have clarified that it is a Shāmī isnād and the mentioned difference in the name of his companions does not harm because all the Companions are just. Moreover, ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr is more reliable and more precise than Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, so his narration is more likely and more authentic. Then I saw that Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned in "al-ʿIlal" (2/299) from his father that he confirmed what I preferred. So all praise is due to Allāh for His guidance, and I ask Him for more of His bounty. The ḥadīth is explicit in negating bad omen, thus it is a strong witness for the ḥadīths that came with the wording: "If there was bad omen in anything..." and similar, contrary to the other wording: "Bad omen is in three..." Thus, with this wording, it is anomalous and less favored as previously explained under ḥadīth (393).
