two Bedouins came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and one of them said: "O Messenger of Allāh! Who among the people is best?" He said, "Blessed is the one whose life is long and whose deeds are good." The other said: "Which deed is best?" He said: "To depart... the ḥadīth." And he said: "It was narrated by Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ from ʿAmr ibn Qays in the same manner." I said: And this isnād is authentic, its men are trustworthy. The follow-up of Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ was also recorded by Aḥmad (4/190): ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ from ʿAmr ibn Qays in a similar manner. It was also recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (2317) with the second part of it, and by al-Tirmidhī in its entirety in separate parts (2/52 and 242). Ḥassān ibn Nūḥ also followed him from ʿAmr ibn Qays in a similar manner. It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/188). Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ and Ḥassān ibn Nūḥ are also trustworthy. The ḥadīth has a supporting narration from Muʿādh ibn Jabal (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) with a similar wording. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād" (pp. 80-81), Ibn Ḥibbān (2318), Ibn al-Sunnī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" number (2), as well as al-Bazzār (pp. 294-295) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (20/107/212) through the route of Ibn Thawbān from his father from Makhūl from Jubayr ibn Nufayr from Mālik ibn Yukhāmir from him. I said: And this isnād is good. It was also narrated by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā as mentioned in "al-Targhīb" (2/228). And his saying: "Blessed is the one whose life is long and whose deeds are good."
