It was recorded by Ibn al-Mubārak in "al-Zuhd" (1340) from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah as marfūʿ. Its isnād is weak.

"The best of people are those with the best character." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī (no. 13326) from Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ: Nāfiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed us from Furwah ibn Qays from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was asked: "Who are the best of people?" He said: "Those with the best character." I say: This isnād is weak, as Furwah ibn Qays and Nāfiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allāh are unknown. However, it is supported by the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAmr as marfūʿ with the wording: "The best among you are those with the best character." It was recorded by al-Shaykhān and others, and it has been mentioned earlier (286).

"The best of women is the one who pleases him when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands, and does not oppose him in herself or in her wealth in what he dislikes." It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī (2/72), al-Ḥākim (2/161), and Aḥmad (2/251, 432, 438) from Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān from Saʿīd al-Maqburī from Abū Hurayrah who said: "It was said to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): 'Which women are best?' He said: 'The one who pleases him...' the ḥadīth." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. Al-ʿIrāqī said (2/36): "Its isnād is authentic." They said so, but it is not the case; rather, it is only ḥasan as we mentioned, for Ibn ʿAjlān is criticized, especially in his narration from Saʿīd from Abū Hurayrah, although he himself is truthful as in "al-Taqrīb," and likewise "al-Mīzān" said: "He was among the righteous and the imams, people of piety and virtue, and among those who issued fatwás, having a circle in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." Moreover, Muslim only narrated from him as corroboration, as al-Ḥākim said in "al-Mīzān": "Muslim included thirteen ḥadīths from him in his book, all as supporting evidence, and our later scholars criticized his poor memory." I say: He is ḥasan in ḥadīth, if Allāh wills. I have found a corroborating narration for this ḥadīth, recorded by al-Ṭayālisī (p. 306, no. 2325): Abū Maʿshar narrated to us from Saʿīd from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "The best of women is the one who, when you look at her, pleases you..." a similar ḥadīth, and he added at the end: "He recited this verse: * (Men are the protectors and maintainers of women) * to the end of the verse." Abū Maʿshar's name is Najīḥ, and he is weak. There is a supporting narration from the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām. Al-Haythamī said (4/273): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and in it is Zurayk ibn Abī Zurayk, whom I do not know, but the rest of its narrators are trustworthy." I say: He is known and trustworthy, so refer to the previously mentioned ḥadīth (1698). Through al-Ṭabarānī's route, it was recorded by al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (58/180/1). There is another supporting narration with the wording: "Shall I not inform you of the best treasure a person can have? ..." It is a portion of a ḥadīth recorded in "al-Ḍaʿīfah" (1319) and in "al-Mishkāt" (1781), and "Ḍaʿīf Abī Dāwūd" (293)
