- "The price of wine is forbidden, the fee of a prostitute is forbidden, the price of a dog is forbidden, and the drum is forbidden. If the owner of the dog comes to you seeking its price, fill his hands with dust. Wine, gambling, and every intoxicant are forbidden." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/169/1, number 12601, printed edition, with a reversal) from Maʿqil ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, from ʿAbd al-Karīm, from Qays ibn Ḥubtar al-Rabīʿī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... I say: This isnād is good; all its men are trustworthy. Maʿqil ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, who is al-Jazarī, has slight weakness due to his memory, but Muslim used him as evidence, and he has been followed up, as will be mentioned. ʿAbd al-Karīm is al-Jazarī, the trustworthy. The ḥadīth was also narrated by Aḥmad (1/278, 289, 350) in separate parts through different chains from ʿAbd al-Karīm with it. Part of it was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (3482) and al-Ṭayālisī (2755). He was followed by ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah who said to me, Qays ibn Ḥubtar narrated something similar. It was narrated by Aḥmad (1/274) through the route of Sufyān from him. And he added: "Sufyān - who is al-Thawrī - said: I said to ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah: What is the drum? He said: The drum." I say: ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah is trustworthy, so the isnād is authentic. (The drum). Ibn al-Athīr said: "It is the dice game. It is also said to be the drum. It is also said to be the lute." In "al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ": "It is a musical instrument similar to the lute, the dice game, or chess."
