I said: It appeared in "al-Mustadrak" as "Abū al-Muthanná Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us from his father" and in "al-Mashyakha" as "Muʿādh ibn al-Muthanná informed us from his father." All of this is due to copyist errors, and the correct version is "al-Muthanná ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī," as becomes clear by referring to the biographies of the father and son in "Tārīkh Baghdād" and "Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb" and others. Al-Ṭaḥāwī asserted in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (3/216) that Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī narrated it from Shuʿbah. Both of them are trustworthy, but al-Muthanná was not included by al-Bukhārī in any of his works. The chain of narration appears sound, but it may be questioned due to the suspension of the companions of Shuʿbah. However, Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh was not the only one to narrate it; he was followed by Dāwūd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Wāsiṭī: Shuʿbah narrated it to us. It was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in "Masānīd Abī Yaḥyá Farās" (Q 92/1). This Dāwūd is trustworthy, as mentioned in "al-Jarḥ" (1/2/407). He was also followed by ʿAmr ibn Ḥakam, who is weak. It was also recorded by Abū Nuʿaym and al-Ṭaḥāwī. He was followed by ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar, who is also trustworthy, who said: Shuʿbah narrated it to us. It was recorded by al-Daylamī (2/58). I have found another route for it from al-Shaʿbī. It was narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir (8/182/1-2) from Isḥāq ibn Wahb—who is al-Bukhārī—from al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām from al-Shaʿbī. However, this Isḥāq was mentioned by al-Khalīlī in "al-Irshād" and he said: "He narrates what is known and what is rejected, and the weak ones scoff at it."
