"When the Prophet of Allāh Nūḥ (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was on his deathbed, he said to his son: 'I am giving you a will. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with (There is no deity but Allāh), for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of a scale and (There is no deity but Allāh) on the other, (There is no deity but Allāh) would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed ring, (There is no deity but Allāh) would break them. And [I command you with] Glory be to Allāh and praise be to Him, for it is the prayer of everything and through it, creation is provided for. I forbid you from shirk and arrogance. He said: I said, or it was said: O Messenger of Allāh, we know what shirk is, but what is arrogance? - He said -: Is it that one of us has two good sandals with good straps? He said: No. He said: Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him? He said: No. It was said: O Messenger of Allāh, then what is arrogance? He said: Rejecting the truth and belittling people." Narrated by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (548), Aḥmad (2/169-170, 225), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Asmāʾ" (79 Hindiyyah) through the route of al-Ṣaqʿab ibn Zuhayr from Zayd ibn Aslam, Ḥammād, I think, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when a man from the desert came wearing a cloak of silk brocade and said: 'Indeed, your companion here has lowered every knight, son of a knight,' meaning he wants to lower every knight, son of a knight, and raise every shepherd, son of a shepherd. He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took hold of the collar of his cloak and said: 'I see on you the clothing of someone who lacks understanding,' then he mentioned it. And I said: This is an authentic chain of narration
