" when it came to the matter of ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn, who had abandoned women, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent for him and said: O ʿUthmān, I have not been commanded to practice monasticism. Have you turned away from my sunnah?" the ḥadīth. I said: Its chain of narration is good. And what Aḥmad narrated (6/226) from the path of ʿUrwah who said: "The wife of ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn—I think her name was Khawlah bint Ḥakīm—entered upon ʿĀʾishah while she was in a disheveled state... (the ḥadīth continues) and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) met ʿUthmān and said: O ʿUthmān, monasticism has not been prescribed for us. Do you not have an example to follow? By Allāh, I am the most fearful of Allāh among you and the most observant of His limits." I said: Its chain of narration is authentic, its men are the men of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], and although it appears to be mursal, it is likely that ʿUrwah received it from his aunt ʿĀʾishah, and it seems for this reason a similar narration from ʿUrwah appears in al-Bukhārī. And Allāh knows best. And Abū Nuʿaym narrated in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (2/245) from the path of Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd who reported from Jarīr from al-Aʿmash from Abū Ḥāzim from Abū Hurayrah as a marfūʿ ḥadīth with the wording: "I have not been sent with monasticism..." the ḥadīth. And it includes a story. But Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd, who is al-Rāzī, was said by al-Ḥāfiẓ: "A weak ḥāfiẓ, but Ibn Maʿīn had a good opinion of him." And what Ibn Qutaybah narrated in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (1/102/1) from the path of Ibn Jurayj from al-Ḥasan ibn Muslim from Ṭāwūs as a marfūʿ ḥadīth with the wording: "There is no bridle, no nose-ring, no monasticism, no celibacy, and no wandering in Islam." And this chain of narration has trustworthy men, and it is mursal. And it was attributed in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr" to ʿAbd al-Razzāq from Ṭāwūs as mursal. And it is most likely that he has it from the path of Ibn Jurayj with it
