and the rest of its narrators are reliable except for Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Thaqafī al-Baṣrī, the teacher of Ibn ʿAdī in it. Al-Khaṭīb mentioned him in "Tārīkh" (4/269) and gave him the kunya Abū ʿAmr, saying: "ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAdī al-Jurjānī narrated from him in 'Muʿjam' and mentioned that he heard from him in Baghdad." He did not mention any criticism or praise about him, and he was followed by al-Ruyānī, the trustworthy ḥāfiẓ, who said in "Musnad" (30/216/1): Abū Ḥafṣ ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī informed us, saying: I heard a shaykh in the year one hundred and seventy-eight say: Abū Ghālib informed us with it except that he said: "the prophets" instead of "the nations" and added: Abū Ḥafṣ said: I described this shaykh, and they said: this is Muḥammad ibn Thābit al-ʿAṣrī. I said: he is al-ʿAbdī himself as in "al-Tahdhīb." The ḥadīth has supporting evidence that strengthens it. As for the first part of it, it has been reported by Abū Dāwūd and others from the ḥadīth of Maʿqil ibn Yasār, and Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it (1229). He also has it from the ḥadīth of Anas (1228), and it is referenced in "Ādāb al-Zafāf" (p. 16) and "al-Irwāʾ" (1811). As for the second part, it is supported by what Ibn Saʿd narrated in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (3/395) from Muʿāwiyah ibn (Abī) ʿAyyāsh al-Jarmī from Abū Qilābah: that ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn made a house and sat worshiping in it. This reached the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), so he came to him and took hold of the doorposts of the house he was in, and said: "O ʿUthmān, Allāh did not send me with monasticism, (twice or thrice) and the best religion with Allāh is the easy ḥanīfiyyah." I said: this is a mursal isnād that is acceptable as supporting evidence, and its narrators are trustworthy, men of the two Shaykhs except for this al-Jarmī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him in his book (4/1/380) and did not mention any criticism or praise about him, and three trustworthy narrators have narrated from him. And what al-Dārimī narrated (2/133) through the route of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: al-Zuhrī narrated to me from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ who said:
