It was recorded by Ibn ʿAdī (vol. 177, p. 2) and he said: "It is strange, and I see no harm in what is narrated from Saʿīd ibn Bashīr, although he might err in some matters and make mistakes, the majority of his ḥadīth are correct, and he is generally truthful." (Note) This is the wording of the ḥadīth according to al-Walīd ibn Muslim and others we mentioned, all of whom narrated it from Ibn al-Mubārak. Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sahm differed from them and said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak informed us... with the wording: "When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would give a drink, he said: Start with the elders, or he said: with the seniors." It was recorded by Abū Yaʿlá (vol. 2, p. 638) and through him by al-Ḍiyāʾ. I said: This wording is anomalous due to Ibn Sahm's contradiction of the reliable narrators, along with Ibn Ḥibbān's statement about him: "He might make mistakes." Especially since its wording apparently contradicts the agreed-upon ḥadīth from Anas: "The rightmost, then the rightmost." (1) Unless it is interpreted, but there is no need for that because interpretation is a branch of correction, so reflect. I said: And more objectionable is the wording narrated by Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak with the wording: "the good..." instead of "the blessing." It was recorded by al-Bazzār (no. 1957). And Nuʿaym is weak. He was followed by al-Naḍr ibn Ṭāhir: Ibn al-Mubārak narrated it to us. It was recorded by al-Daylamī (vol. 2, p. 136). And al-Naḍr is very weak as Ibn ʿAdī said.
