while we were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), he noticed a group and said: "What are these people gathered for?" It was said: "For a grave they are digging." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) became alarmed and hurriedly went ahead of his companions until he reached the grave and knelt upon it. I stood before him to see what he was doing, and he wept until the soil was wet with his tears, then he turned to us and said: "and he mentioned it." I said: This isnād is good; its men are trustworthy except for Muḥammad ibn Mālik, who is Abū al-Mughīrah al-Jawzjānī, a client of al-Barāʾ. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/1/88) from his father: "There is no harm in him," but Ibn Ḥibbān was inconsistent regarding him, mentioning him in his books "al-Thiqāt" and "al-Ḍuʿafāʾ"! He said about him: "He made many mistakes, and his reports should not be used as evidence if he is alone." And he said in the first of them: "He did not hear anything from al-Barāʾ." I said: The ḥāfiẓ followed up on this with what Aḥmad reported after this ḥadīth with the same isnād from Muḥammad ibn Mālik, who said: "I saw a gold ring on al-Barāʾ, and people used to say to him: 'Why do you wear a gold ring when the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade it?' Al-Barāʾ said: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and he was distributing war booty and spoils, he distributed it until this ring remained. He lifted his gaze and looked at his companions, then lowered it, then lifted his gaze and looked at them again, then lowered it, then lifted his gaze and looked at them again and said: "O Barāʾ?" So I went to him and sat before him, and he took the ring and grasped my wrist, then said: "Take and wear what Allāh and His Messenger have given you."' He said: Al-Barāʾ used to say: 'How can you command me to remove what the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Wear what Allāh and His Messenger have given you"?' The ḥāfiẓ said: "This negates Ibn Ḥibbān's statement that he did not hear from al-Barāʾ, unless he considers him untruthful, in which case he should not have included him in the book (al-Thiqāt)."
