"I have not known him to have a narrator except Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr." This is countered by the narration of al-Ḥublī from him. Third: from Abū Sufyān from his elders who said: Saʿd entered upon Salmān to visit him, he said: and he cried... the ḥadīth without the addition, and there is another addition, see it in "al-Targhīb" (4/99) if you wish. It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd: Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr informed us, saying: al-Aʿmash narrated to us from Abū Sufyān... and it was also recorded by Abū Nuʿaym and al-Ḥākim (4/317) through two other chains from Abū Muʿāwiyah with it. And al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said. As for al-Mundhirī's critique of it by saying: "Thus he said." It is apparent that he is referring to the unknown status of Abū Sufyān's elders, but such ignorance does not harm according to the verified scholars among the critics because they are a group whose ignorance is compensated for, especially since they are from the Tābiʿīn on the weaker of the two possibilities. For Jarīr narrated it from al-Aʿmash, saying: from Abū Sufyān from Jābir who said: Saʿd entered... it was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym. I said: So this narration—if it is preserved—supports the possibility that Abū Sufyān's elders were from the Companions, or at least one of them. And Allāh knows best. Fourth: from Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān from Thābit from Anas who said: Salmān fell ill, so Saʿd visited him and saw him crying... the ḥadīth and it includes the addition found in the third path.
