then ʿUthmān asked for permission, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sat up and adjusted his clothes. ʿĀʾishah said: Abū Bakr entered... the ḥadīth continues and includes... then ʿUthmān entered, and you sat up and adjusted your clothes? He said: "Should I not be shy of a man before whom the angels are shy?" It was recorded by Muslim and al-Ṭaḥāwī in "al-Mushkil" (2/283) and Abū Yaʿlá (3/1178-1179), and al-Ṭaḥāwī does not include the phrase: "or his legs," which is a doubt from some of the narrators. The ḥadīth has been reported without this doubt through another chain, recorded by Aḥmad (6/32) from Marwān who said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Sayyār informed us, saying: I heard ʿĀʾishah bint Ṭalḥah narrate from ʿĀʾishah in a summarized form. I said: I did not find a biography for ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Sayyār, and he was mentioned in "al-Taʿjīl" saying: "He narrated from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā), and from him Marwān. Al-Ḥusaynī said: Unknown." I said: I did not see it in "Musnad ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā)" from "Musnad Aḥmad"! I said: It appears as: "from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā)" which implies that the biographed person narrated from ʿĀʾishah al-Ṣiddīqah, but he actually narrated from ʿĀʾishah bint Abī Ṭalḥah about her, as you can see. There is corroboration from the ḥadīth of ʿAmr ibn Muslim, the owner of the maqṣūrah, from Anas ibn Mālik who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entered a garden from the gardens of the Anṣār, and there was a well in the garden, so he sat on its edge, his legs dangling and part of his thigh exposed, and he instructed me to sit at the door. It wasn't long before Abū Bakr came. The ḥadīth continues and includes: They said: Why, O Messenger of Allāh, did you cover your thigh when ʿUthmān came? He said: I am shy before a man before whom the angels are shy." It was recorded by al-Ṭaḥāwī (2/284) and its chain is good for corroboration, its men are trustworthy and well-known except for ʿAmr ibn Muslim, whom Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned (3/1/260) with two trustworthy narrators from him, without mentioning any criticism or endorsement.
