It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (no. 13236) from Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Sammān, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Sālim, from his father. I said: And Abū al-Rabīʿ—whose name is Ashʿath ibn Saʿīd al-Sammān—is abandoned, and he alone narrated the phrase: "so gather upon it..." However, there are supporting narrations for this addition, so refer to ḥadīth (664).
"ʿUthmān is a modest man, and I feared that if I permitted him in that state, he would not express his need to me." It was recorded by Muslim (7/117), al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (600), al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Sharḥ al-Maʿānī" (1/274) and "Mushkil al-Āthār" (2/290-291), Aḥmad (6/155 and 167), and Abū Yaʿlá (3/1095) from Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ that ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ (Muslim and others added: and ʿUthmān) narrated to him: that Abū Bakr sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ while he was reclining on his bed wearing ʿĀʾishah's garment, so he permitted Abū Bakr while he was in that state, and he fulfilled his need and then left. Then ʿUmar sought permission, and he permitted him while he was in that state, and he fulfilled his need and then left. ʿUthmān said: Then I sought permission to enter upon him, so he sat up and said to ʿĀʾishah: "Gather your clothes around you." I fulfilled my need with him and then left. ʿĀʾishah said: O Messenger of Allāh, why did I not see you alarmed for Abū Bakr and ʿUmar as you were alarmed for ʿUthmān? The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: and he mentioned it. It was also narrated by Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥurmalah from ʿAṭāʾ and Sulaymān, the sons of Yasār, and Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from her, she said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was reclining in my house with his thighs or legs uncovered when Abū Bakr sought permission, so he permitted him while he was in that state... (the ḥadīth continues and includes):
