is only justified for those who did not prostrate to Him, the Exalted, in this world, as al-Ṭaḥāwī said. Accordingly, their being thrown into the fire could imply two things: the first is that they are part of the fuel of the fire. al-Ismāʿīlī said: "Their being in the fire does not necessarily mean they are being punished, for Allāh has in the fire angels, stones, and other things to serve as a punishment and a means of torment for the people of the fire, and whatever Allāh wills of that, so they are not being punished." The second is that they are thrown into it as a reproach to those who worshiped them. al-Khaṭṭābī said: "The purpose of their being in the fire is not to punish them, but rather to reproach those who worshiped them in this world so that they may know that their worship of them was in vain." I said: This is closer to the wording of the ḥadīth and is supported by the ḥadīth of Anas reported by Abū Yaʿlá, as mentioned in "al-Fatḥ" (6/214): "so that those who worshiped them may see them." I did not find it in his "Musnad," and Allāh knows best.
"Whoever wishes to look at a man walking on earth who has fulfilled his vow, let him look at Ṭalḥah." It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (3/1/155). Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr informed us, saying: Ṣāliḥ ibn Mūsá narrated to us from Muʿāwiyah ibn Isḥāq from ʿĀʾishah bint Ṭalḥah from ʿĀʾishah who said: "I was in my house, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and his Companions were in the courtyard, and between me and them was a curtain. Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh approached, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said," and she mentioned it
