It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (2/98-99) from Maysarah ibn Ḥabīb al-Nahdī, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿah, "that he was riding behind ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and when he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: 'In the name of Allāh.' When he settled on the back of the animal, he said: 'All praise is due to Allāh' (three times) and 'Allāh is the Greatest' (three times), *'Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it'* (Sūrah az-Zukhruf, verse 13). Then he said: 'There is no deity except You, Glory be to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me my sins. Surely, none forgives sins except You.' Then he leaned to one side and laughed. I asked: 'O Commander of the Faithful, what makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was riding behind the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) did as I have done, so I asked him as you have asked me, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said....' and he mentioned it. And he said: 'This ḥadīth is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim.' Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: This al-Nahdī was not recorded by Muslim, but only by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad," so it is only authentic. Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī followed him from ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿah with a similar, but abridged, narration. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2602), al-Tirmidhī (2/255-256), Aḥmad (1/97, 115, 128), and Ibn al-Sunnī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (490) through various chains from him. Al-Tirmidhī said: 'A good and authentic ḥadīth.' This is what he said, and Abū Isḥāq had become confused, and the wording with Aḥmad is more complete. It was also recorded by Ibn al-Sunnī (493) through the route of al-Ajlah from Abū Isḥāq from al-Ḥārith from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib with a similar, but abridged, narration. And al-Ajlah is weak
