"whoever drags his garments, Allāh will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." Abū Rayḥānah said, "What you have narrated to us has distressed us. I love beauty to the extent that I even put it in my sandals and the strap of my whip. Is that arrogance?" The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) replied, "Indeed, Allāh is beautiful and loves beauty, and He loves to see the effect of His blessing on His servant. But arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people's deeds." Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it (17/200/1) in the biography of this Qurashī without mentioning any criticism or commendation. As for ʿAṭāʾ, who is Ibn Muslim al-Khurāsānī, the ḥāfiẓ said, "Truthful but makes many mistakes, and sends and conceals [ḥadīths]." I say: But his ḥadīth is authentic because its ends are supported by what has preceded, and as for its middle, it has come from the ḥadīth of the father of Abū al-Aḥwaṣ and Ibn ʿAmr, and it is extracted in "Ghāyat al-Marām fī Takhrīj al-Ḥalāl wa-al-Ḥarām" (no. 76) and "al-Mishkāt" (4350). 5 - As for the ḥadīth of Jābir, it is narrated by Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Madīnī from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, who heard him say: Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī narrated to us in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Indeed, Allāh is beautiful and loves beauty, and He loves noble matters and dislikes trivial ones." Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it (11/50/2). I say: This isnād is acceptable in supporting evidences, for Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Madīnī, the ḥāfiẓ said, "Truthful but errs." The first part has supporting evidences as mentioned earlier, and as for the other part, it has other supporting evidences whose extraction will follow this, if Allāh wills
