Allāh took the covenant from the back of Adam at (Nuʿmān) - meaning ʿArafah - and brought forth from his loins all his descendants that He created, and scattered them before Him like particles. Then He spoke to them directly, saying: *"Am I not your Lord?" They said: "Yes, we testify," lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were unaware of this," or lest you say, "It was only that our forefathers associated [others in worship] before, and we were descendants after them. Will You then destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"* (Al-Aʿrāf, 172-173). It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/272), Ibn Jarīr in "al-Tafsīr" (15338), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Sunnah" (17/1), al-Ḥākim (2/544), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Asmāʾ wa-al-Ṣifāt" (p. 326-327), all from the route of al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Marwadhī who narrated to us from Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, from Kulthūm ibn Jabr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who said: and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "Its isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: It is proper for them to qualify it as being according to the conditions of Muslim, for Kulthūm ibn Jabr is among his narrators, and the rest are narrators of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]. Wahb ibn Jarīr followed him, narrating from his father without mentioning "Nuʿmān" and also said: "Its isnād is authentic, and Muslim has used Kulthūm ibn Jabr as evidence." Al-Dhahabī also agreed with him. As for Ibn Kathīr, he critiqued it by saying in "al-Tafsīr" (2/262): "This is what he said, and it was narrated by ʿAbd al-Wārith from Kulthūm ibn Jabr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, stopping it [at Ibn ʿAbbās]." Similarly, it was narrated by Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah and Wakīʿ from Rabīʿah ibn Kulthūm ibn Jabr from his father, and likewise by ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, and ʿAlī ibn Badhīmah from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās, and similarly by al-ʿAwfī and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥah from Ibn ʿAbbās. This is more numerous and more established. And Allāh knows best
