Maʿdān from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir from Abū Umāmah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. The wording is from al-Ḥākim, who said: "Its isnād is authentic!" al-Dhahabī refuted it by saying: "I say ʿAfīr is weak." I say: It is as al-Dhahabī (raḥimahu Allāh) said, and al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "He is weak," and likewise al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (2/291). I say: But it has a corroborating narration reported by Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Rāshid ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣanʿānī from Abū al-Ashʿath al-Ṣanʿānī that he went to the mosque of Damascus, and he went early, where he met Shaddād ibn Aws and al-Ṣunābihī with him. I said: Where are you going, may Allāh have mercy on you both? They said: We are going here to visit our sick brother, so I went with them until they entered upon that man and said to him: How have you become? He said: I have become blessed, so Shaddād said to him: Rejoice in the expiation of sins and the removal of faults, for I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "Indeed, Allāh (subḥānahu wa-taʿālā) says: If I test a servant of Mine who is a believer and he praises Me for what I have tested him with, he will rise from that bed as free from sins as the day his mother gave birth to him, and the Lord (subḥānahu wa-taʿālā) says: I have restrained My servant and tested him, so reward him as you used to reward him when he was healthy." It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/123) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (7136). I say: This isnād is good, its narrators are trustworthy, and there is slight criticism of Rāshid ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣanʿānī, but his ḥadīth does not fall below the rank of ḥasan, and al-Ḥāfiẓ indicated this by saying about him: "Truthful with mistakes."
