- "Indeed, the righteous are tested severely, and no believer is afflicted with a calamity, even as small as a thorn, except that it expiates a sin for him and raises him in rank." It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/160), Ibn Ḥibbān (702), and al-Ḥākim (4/320) only the beginning, through the route of Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām who said: I heard Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr say: Abū Qilābah informed me that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shaybah informed him that ʿĀʾishah informed him: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was afflicted with pain, and he began to complain and turn about on his bed. ʿĀʾishah said: If this were done by one of us, you would have found it burdensome. The Prophet ﷺ then mentioned it, and al-Ḥākim said: 'The isnād is authentic.'" Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said, and its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of Muslim except for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shaybah, who is trustworthy. He was followed by ʿAlī, who is Ibn al-Mubārak, from Yaḥyá with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/215). And the ḥadīth in "Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim" (8/15-16) has other routes from ʿĀʾishah similar to it, and in some of them: "except that Allāh writes for him a good deed or expiates a sin for him."

"When a servant falls ill, Allāh reveals to His angels: O My angels, I have restrained My servant with one of My restraints. If I take his soul, I will forgive him, and if I heal him, then at that time he will sit without sin." It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (7697) and al-Ḥākim (4/313) from ʿAfīr ibn
