"When Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) was thrown into the fire, there was no creature that did not try to extinguish the fire for him except the gecko, which was blowing on it." This was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2/295), Ibn Ḥibbān (1082), and Aḥmad (6/83, 109, and 217) through the narration of Nāfiʿ from Sāʾibah, the freedwoman of al-Fākih ibn al-Mughīrah. She entered upon ʿĀʾishah and saw a spear placed in her house. She said, "O Mother of the Believers! What do you do with this spear?" She replied, "We kill geckos with it, for the Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) informed us," and she mentioned it, adding at the end: "He (peace be upon him) commanded to kill it." I said: This isnād is weak; its narrators are trustworthy except for this Sāʾibah. Al-Dhahabī said: "Nāfiʿ is the only one who narrated from her." I said: This indicates that she is unknown, so al-Būṣīrī's statement in "al-Zawāʾid" (194/2): "This isnād is authentic" is incorrect due to the anonymity of the mentioned person. However, she has been followed up, as al-Nasāʾī recorded (2/27) through the narration of Qatādah from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib: that a woman entered upon ʿĀʾishah with a stick in her hand... a similar ḥadīth. I said: This isnād is authentic if Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib heard it from ʿĀʾishah; otherwise, its apparent form is that it is from his mursal narrations. And Allāh knows best. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jubayr contradicted this by saying: from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib from Umm Shurayk (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā): that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded the killing of the gecko, and said: "It was blowing on Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him)." This was recorded by al-Bukhārī (6/305 - Fatḥ) and Ibn Mājah and Aḥmad (6/421 and 462), but the second part of it is not with them.
