"The thing I fear most for my nation is misguided leaders." This is reported from the ḥadīth of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū al-Dardāʾ, Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī, Thawbān the servant of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), Shaddād ibn Aws, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. 1 - As for the ḥadīth of ʿUmar, it is narrated by Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr from Abū al-Mukhāriq Zuhayr ibn Sālim from Kaʿb from ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Kaʿb said: By Allāh, I fear nothing for this nation except them. It was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (6/46) and he said: "It is rare from the ḥadīth of Kaʿb, uniquely narrated by Ṣafwān." I say: He is trustworthy, and Muslim relied upon him. As for Zuhayr ibn Sālim, the ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful but has some weakness." I say: The chain is good, if Allāh wills, and it is certainly authentic with what follows. It was also recorded by Aḥmad (1/42): ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn al-Ḥajjāj narrated to us, Ṣafwān narrated to us, Abū al-Mukhāriq Zuhayr ibn Sālim narrated to me that ʿUmayr ibn Saʿd al-Anṣārī was appointed by ʿUmar over (Ḥimṣ) and he mentioned the ḥadīth. ʿUmar said - meaning to Kaʿb -: I ask you about a matter, so do not conceal it from me. He said: By Allāh, I will not conceal anything I know from you. He said: What is the thing you fear most for the nation of Muḥammad (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He said: Misguided leaders. ʿUmar said: You have spoken the truth, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) confided this to me and informed me of it. 2 - As for the ḥadīth of Abū al-Dardāʾ, it is narrated by a brother of ʿAdī ibn Arṭāʾah from a man from him who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entrusted us..." and he mentioned it with the wording of the translation.
