"If you are able to capture him, then kill him, but do not burn him with fire, for only the Lord of the fire punishes with fire." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (1/417) and Aḥmad (3/494) through the chain of al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥizāmī from Abū al-Zinād, who reported from Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah al-Aslamī from his father, attributed to the Prophet in a similar manner. I said: This isnād is authentic; all its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, and there is some discussion regarding Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah al-Aslamī which does not harm [the authenticity], especially since he has been corroborated. Aḥmad also narrated it through the chain of Ziyād ibn Saʿd, who reported that Abū al-Zinād informed him, saying: Ḥanẓalah ibn ʿAlī informed me about Ḥamzah ibn ʿAmr al-Aslamī, a Companion of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who narrated: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent him and others to a man from ʿUdhrah, saying: 'If you are able to capture so-and-so, then burn him with fire.' They set out until they were out of sight, then he called them back or sent someone after them, and he said: 'Then he mentioned it.'" I said: This isnād is good, and it meets the criteria of Muslim. There is a supporting narration from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent us on an expedition and said: "If you find so-and-so and so-and-so, burn them with fire." Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said as we were about to depart: "I had commanded you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so, but only Allāh punishes with fire.
