"It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" and its narrators are those of the authentic collections." It was narrated by al-Bazzār (p. 60 - his additions) through the route of ʿImrān ibn Khālid al-Khayyāṭ from Thābit from him. And this ʿImrān is al-Khuzāʿī and he is weak as Abū Ḥātim and others said. Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated from al-Tamīmī who said: I asked Ibn ʿAbbās about the toothstick? He said: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) kept commanding us with it until we feared that it would be revealed upon him regarding it." It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/285 and 339-340) and al-Bayhaqī (1/35) from Shuʿbah and Sufyān from him. And this al-Tamīmī - whose name is Arbad - is unknown. And they were followed by Sharīk ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Abū Isḥāq with the wording: "I was commanded with the toothstick until I thought or assumed that the Quran would be revealed regarding it." It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/237, 307, 315, and 337). And Sharīk has poor memory. And it is supported by a ḥadīth of Layth from Abū Burdah from Abū Malīḥ ibn Usāmah from Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "I was commanded with the toothstick until I feared it would be prescribed for me."
