so the sunnah is to give preference to the right side, as mentioned by al-Muhallab, and the ḥadīth he referred to will come, if Allāh wills (1771).
"I was commanded to use the toothstick until I feared for my teeth." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/155/2) and from him by al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (61/249/1) through the chain of al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿd ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid who said: My grandfather ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me, my father narrated to me, ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib informed us from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās from the Prophet ﷺ with it. I say: This isnād is weak; its narrators are trustworthy except for al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿd ibn ʿAlī... as I did not find a biography for him, although they mentioned him among those who narrated from his grandfather ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn. And ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib had become confused. And through his route, it was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" as in "al-Majmaʿ" (2/98) and it was criticized only for this! However, the ḥadīth has supporting evidence that elevates it to the level of authenticity: the first is from Sahl ibn Saʿd with the wording: "Jibrīl continued to advise me about the toothstick until I feared for my molars." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" and its narrators are reliable, although there is some disagreement about some of them, as al-Haythamī said. Then I saw it in "al-Kabīr" (6018/1) through the chain of ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid Abū ʿAbbād al-Qaysī who said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghifārī narrated to us, saying: I heard Sahl ibn Saʿd in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Jibrīl commanded me to use the toothstick until I thought I would lose my teeth." And ʿUbayd is weak. And the wording mentioned by al-Haythamī I did not see in the biography of Sahl in "al-Kabīr." The second: from ʿĀʾishah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "I adhered to the toothstick until I feared it would cause me to lose my teeth."
