"I saw myself using a toothstick, and two men came to me, one of whom was older than the other. I handed the toothstick to the younger of the two, and it was said to me: 'Give it to the older one,' so I gave it to the older of the two." I said: This is an authentic isnād, and its apparent meaning indicates that the incident occurred in a dream, contrary to the narration of Usāmah. However, the ḥāfiẓ reconciled between them by saying: "When this occurred while awake, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) informed them of what he saw in the dream, as a notification that his command in this regard was by prior revelation, so some narrators preserved what others did not." The narration of Ibn al-Mubārak is supported by what Abū Dāwūd narrated with a good isnād from ʿĀʾishah, who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was with two men, and it was revealed to him: 'Give the toothstick to the older one.'" Ibn Baṭṭāl said: It shows the preference for the elder in using the toothstick, and it extends to food, drink, walking, and speaking. Al-Muhallab said: This is unless the people are arranged in seating. If they are arranged, then the sunnah at that time is to give precedence to the one on the right, and this is correct. The ḥadīth regarding this will come." I said: The ḥadīth of Abū Dāwūd has an authentic isnād according to me, as I clarified in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" number (45). The ḥadīth is also supported by what was recorded by the two Shaykhs, al-Nasāʾī, and others in the ḥadīth of (al-Qasāmah) from the narration of Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj and Sahl ibn Abī Ḥathmah, who said: "ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sahl, who was the youngest of the group, went to speak before his two companions. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: 'Give precedence to the elder in age.' In a narration by al-Nasāʾī: 'The elder, let the elder begin,' so Rāfiʿ and Sahl spoke." I said: This is specific to speaking, and the ḥadīth of the chapter and similar ones pertain to the toothstick, but as for drinking..
" أراني أتسوك بسواك فجاءنيرجلان أحدها أكبر من الآخر. فناولت السواك الأصغر منهما، فقيل لي: كبر،فدفعته إلى الأكبر منهما ". قلت: وهذا إسناد صحيح وهو بظاهره يدل على أن القضية وقعت مناما خلافا لروايةأسامة. لكن الحافظ جمع بينهما فقال: " إن ذلك لما وقع في اليقظة أخبرهم رسولالله ﷺ بما رآه في النوم تنبيها على أن أمره بذلك بوحي متقدم، فحفظ بعض الرواة لما لم يحفظ بعض. ويشهد لرواية ابن المبارك ما رواه أبوداود بإسناد حسن عن عائشة قالت: " كان رسول الله ﷺ يستنوعنده رجلان فأوحي إليه: أن أعط السواك الأكبر ". قال ابن بطال: فيه تقديمذي السن في السواك، ويلتحق به الطعام والشراب والمشي والكلام. وقالالمهلب: هذا ما لم يترتب القوم في الجلوس. فإذا ترتبوا فالسنة حينئذ تقديمالأيمن، وهو صحيح. وسيأتي الحديث فيه ". قلت: وحديث أبي داود صحيح الإسناد عندي، كما بينته في " صحيح أبي داود " رقم(٤٥). ويشهد للحديث أيضا، ما أخرجه الشيخان والنسائي وغيرهم في حديث (القسامة) من رواية رافع بن خديج وسهل بن أبي حثمة قالا: " فذهب عبد الرحمنابن سهل - وكان أصغر القوم - يتكلم قبل صاحبيه. فقال له رسول الله صلى اللهعليه وسلم " كبر الكبر في السن " وفي رواية للنسائي: " الكبر، ليبدأ الأكبر، فتكلما ". يعني رافعا وسهلا. قلت: فهذا خاص في الكلام، وحديث الترجمة ونحوه في السواك وأما في الشرب
