I said: This isnād consists of trustworthy men, except that Ibn Adhnān was only deemed reliable by Ibn Ḥibbān, and there is a difference of opinion regarding his name. The most likely view is that it is Salīm, as the investigator Aḥmad Shākir (may Allāh have mercy on him) concluded, and this will be explicitly stated soon in some of the routes. As for ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, he became confused. However, there is another route for the ḥadīth, as al-Ṭabarānī said in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (no. 9180): ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, Abū Nuʿaym informed us, Dalham ibn Ṣāliḥ informed us, Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī told me that ʿAlqamah ibn Qays borrowed a thousand dirhams from ʿAbd Allāh... the ḥadīth is similar and its end was not raised, and its wording is: "ʿAbd Allāh said: To lend money twice is more beloved to me than to give it in charity once." And this Dalham is weak. As for Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī, Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him (1/2/224) for this isnād, without mentioning any criticism or endorsement. The last sentence of it has been narrated through two other routes from Ibn Masʿūd as marfūʿ, and thus, with all of this, it is authentic. And Allāh knows best. Refer to "Takhrīj al-Targhīb" (2/34). And he was followed regarding the last sentence by Qays ibn Rūmī from Salīm ibn Adhnān as marfūʿ with the wording: "Whoever lends silver twice, it is as if he has given charity once." It was recorded by al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 19), Ibn Shāhīn in "al-Targhīb wa-al-Tarhīb" (314/1), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (5/353). And there is another route from al-Aswad ibn Yazīd from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd as marfūʿ with the wording: "Whoever lends twice will have the reward of one of them as if he had given it in charity."
