and in the ḥadīth, there is clear evidence of the eternal nature of the disbelievers in the Fire and that it will not perish along with those in it, contrary to the saying of some. For if it were to perish along with those in it, they would die and find relief, which contradicts the ḥadīth. Those among our eminent scholars who have held the view of its perishing did not pay attention to this or to other texts from the Qurʾān and sunnah that support it. Imām al-Ṣanʿānī refuted this with a strong scholarly rebuttal in his book "Rafʿ al-Astār li-Ibṭāl Adillat al-Qāʾilīn bi-Fanāʾ al-Nār." I have verified it, extracted its ḥadīths, and provided it with a comprehensive and beneficial introduction. It is under publication and will be in the hands of readers soon, if Allāh wills.
وفي الحديث دليل صريح على خلود الكفار في النار، وعدم فنائها بمن فيها،خلافا لقول بعضهم لأنه لو فنيت بمن فيها لماتوا واستراحوا، وهذا خلاف الحديثولم يتنبه لهذا ولا لغيره من نصوص الكتاب والسنة المؤيد له من ذهب من أفاضلعلمائنا إلى القول بفنائها، وقد رده الإمام الصنعاني ردا علميا متينا فيكتابه " رفع الأستار لإبطال أدلة القائلين بفناء النار "، وقد حققته، وخرجتأحاديثه، وقدمت له بمقدمة ضافية نافعة، وهو تحت الطبع، وسيكون في أيديالقراء قريبا إن شاء الله تعالى.
"Now then, O people of Quraysh! You are the people of this matter as long as you do not disobey Allāh. But if you disobey Him, He will send against you someone who will chastise you as this stick chastises"—referring to a stick in his hand. It was narrated by Aḥmad (1/458): Yaʿqūb narrated to us, my father narrated to us from Ṣāliḥ, Ibn Shihāb said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtaybah narrated to me that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said: "While we were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) among nearly eighty men from Quraysh, all of whom were Qurashī, by Allāh, I have never seen faces of men more handsome than theirs that day. They mentioned women and talked about them, and he talked with them until I wished he would stop. Then I came to him, he testified, and then said: (and he mentioned it), then he chastised his stick, and it was white and solid." I said: This isnād is authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Al-Haythamī said in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (5/192): "It was narrated by Aḥmad, Abū Yaʿlá, and al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ,' and the men of Aḥmad are the men of the authentic collections, and the men of Abū Yaʿlá are trustworthy." It was narrated by al-Qāsim ibn al-Ḥārith from ʿUbayd Allāh, who said: from Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī
- "أما بعد يا معشر قريش! فإنكم أهل هذا الأمر ما لم تعصوا الله، فإذا عصيتموه بعث إليكم من يلحاكم كما يلحى هذا القضيب - لقضيب في يده". أخرجه أحمد (١ / ٤٥٨): حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن صالح قال ابن شهاب: حدثني عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتيبة أن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: "بينا نحن عند رسول الله ﷺ في قريب من ثمانين رجلا من قريش، ليس فيهم إلا قرشي، لا والله ما رأيت صفيحة وجوه رجال قط أحسن من وجوههم يومئذ، فذكروا النساء، فتحدثوا فيهن، فتحدث معهم، حتى أحببت أن يسكت، قال: ثم أتيته فتشهد، ثم قال: (فذكره)، ثم لحى قضيبه، فإذا هو أبيض يصلد". قلت: وهذا إسناد صحيح على شرط الشيخين. وقال الهيثمي في "مجمع الزوائد" (٥ / ١٩٢): "رواه أحمد وأبو يعلى والطبراني في "الأوسط" ورجال أحمد رجال الصحيح، ورجال أبي يعلى ثقات". ورواه القاسم بن الحارث عن عبيد الله فقال: عن أبي مسعود الأنصاري.
