"the polytheists of Quraysh came arguing with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) about predestination, so the verse was revealed: *On the Day they will be dragged into the Fire...*. I say: this does not contradict it, as it is possible that this [verse] was revealed concerning the polytheists and their likes among those who deny predestination in this nation. And Allāh knows best.

- "He used to supplicate: O Allāh, protect me with Islam while standing, protect me with Islam while sitting, protect me with Islam while reclining, and do not let an envious enemy gloat over me. O Allāh, I ask You for every good whose treasures are in Your hand, and I seek refuge in You from every evil whose treasures are in Your hand." It was reported by al-Ḥākim (1/525) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, who narrated from al-Layth ibn Saʿd, who narrated from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá, who was informed by Ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) about the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he used to supplicate... the ḥadīth. And he said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī." Al-Dhahabī refuted this by saying: "I say: Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ was not included by al-Bukhārī." I said: And I do not know who he is. I found another chain for the ḥadīth narrated by Muʿallá ibn Ruʾbah al-Tamīmī al-Ḥimṣī from Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was afflicted by a calamity, so he came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), complained to him about it, and asked him to order a load of dates for him. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: If you wish, I will order a load of dates for you, and if you wish, I will teach you words that are better for you. He said: Teach them to me, and order a load for me, for I am in need of it. He said..
